Mis nervios, mi tacto, mi sentido del olfato”, dice.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">Dice que sus viajes son motivados por un sentido de descubrimiento y de libertad.</span><br />

Ni siquiera un problema renal detectado en 2002, que lo obligó a someterse a un trasplante en 2008, con un riñón donado por su padrastro, que hizo que dejara de viajar.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">“La operación fue un éxito, y después de un período de recuperación de unos tres meses se fue de nuevo de gira por el Reino Unido, y siete meses después por el mundo”, dice.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">La enfermedad, dice, le llevó a tomar otra decisión en 2002: dejar de beber, porque estaba a punto de convertirse en un alcohólico.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">En medio de los problemas de la salud y los viajes, Giles todavía encontró tiempo para graduarse en Historia de América.</span></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 14pt;">Sobre el futuro, no muestra dudas sobre lo que quiere: “. Por ello, es muy importante que todos cuantos trabajemos con personas sordociegas <b>conozcamos y dominemos los sistemas de comunicación </b>existentes. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><span> </span>El momento del inicio de la sordoceguera desempeña un papel decisivo en el desarrollo del lenguaje y de la comunicación. Si la <b>deficiencia visual-auditiva se presenta antes de la adquisición del lenguaje</b>, los niños aprenderán con grandes dificultades la función de los símbolos. En cambio, los niños que <b>han aprendido a hablar antes de sobrevenirles la sordoceguera</b> y, también los que han quedado sordociegos de jóvenes y adultos, suelen conservar la lengua oral en el transcurso de sus vidas, si no concurren circunstancias especiales. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><span> </span>Existen personas sordociegas que manejan varios sistemas de comunicación, otras en cambio sólo aspectos elementales de uno de ellos, algunos que se comunican con gestos naturales y muchos que carecen de sistema comunicativo alguno. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt; text-align: justify;"><br />

La persona que la sufre, se ve afectada en el ámbito educativo, laboral, social y cultural, y si además la discapacidad es adquirida a una edad temprana o es de nacimiento, repercute también en la personalidad y la conducta. <span style="font-family: Verdana;">A nivel estatal, el número de personas sordociegas censadas por la ONCE es de 1.129 personas, aunque se estima por estadística comparativa con otros países de la Unión Europea que hay 15 personas sordociegas por cada 100.000 habitantes, esto significaría que en <b>España</b> hay unas <b>6.000 personas sordociegas</b>. Aún así es importante destacar que es difícil estimar el número de personas sordociegas ya que hay muchas personas que adquieren la sordoceguera a lo largo de su vida, especialmente en la tercera edad y esto hace que su detección sea más complicada.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;"><br />
